Did ye ken?
The Rubik's Cube is 30 years old! More than 350 million Rubik's Cubes have been sold over the past 30 years and if they were all placed on top of each other, they would reach the top of Mount Everest a staggering 1,937 times.
The Rubik's Cube has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (43 quintillion) combinations. If you made a single turn of one of the Cube's faces every second, it would take you 1,400 million million years to go through all the possible configurations. By way of comparison, the universe itself is only 14 thousand million years old.
But what does something invented in 1974 by a Hungarian professor (one Erno Rubik) have to do with a blog about Scotland? Well, the current World Rubik's Speedcubing Champion is a Scottish teenager - young Breandan Vallance - who won the title in October 2009 with an average solving time of 10.74 seconds. Simply incredible!
